Elementary School Newsletter - September 20th, 2021

The Fall Equinox is upon us this week and we can eventually look forward to cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and pumpkin spice everything. We will continue to try and get our kids outside learning and playing as much as possible as we continue to work on social skills, academics, and fun!

Here's a quick message from our wonderful new Elementary Assistant Principal.

My name is Marissa Moore and I am the Elementary Assistant Principal. I started off as a Spanish teacher and transitioned to leadership after 4 years in the classroom. My first year at PCS was last year in a virtual capacity, so I am thrilled to be experiencing my first year interacting with students and staff this school year. Some of my professional areas of passion are restorative practices, culturally responsive teaching, and equitable classroom practices. Some of my favorite pastimes are swimming, traveling, reading, floating, and rooting on the Kansas City Chiefs. I am so eager to continue becoming part of the PCS community and I look forward to getting to know you and your children.

Our literacy coach Mrs. Elizabeth Crowder has a quick note about how we are monitoring our student's progress in reading.

This month the reading specialist and classroom teachers are administering the Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) to students. The DRA is an individual reading assessment that determines a student's independent and instructional reading level. It enables reading specialists and classroom teachers to determine a students' reading accuracy, oral reading fluency, and comprehension. Reading specialists and classroom teachers are able to monitor students' reading progress and capabilities. The DRA determines a students' individual reading instruction and evaluates reading progress and growth.

Reminders:

  • There is a Board Meeting Thursday, September 23rd at 4:30. More information about in-person/or Zoom links will be coming out shortly.

We have so much to offer academically in addition to our core subjects such as reading, writing, and math. Our students get Physical Education multiple times a week with Mr. Valandra or Mrs. Ryback. They have the opportunity to experience different languages and cultures with Ms. Crawford. Mrs. Boger teaches all different types of music and Mrs. Nilsen introduces art. Mr. Peterson gets technological with the students and teaches computer coding. We will showcase some of the things that the teachers and students do together throughout the year!
